How you're tested — in two stages
A Buck's certificate is earned, not bought — and that's exactly why it's worth something. Testing happens in two separate stages: an online theory gate that earns your cohort invitation, then the in-person four-modality exam you sit at your 30-day cohort. They are not the same test — the online finals prove you're ready to be invited; the certificate is earned in person.

Stage 1 · before your cohort
Online theory gate
Once you're invited, you complete a self-paced online course and pass three written finals. Passing all three is the prerequisite that unlocks your cohort — it proves you're theory-ready. It is not a substitute for the in-person exam.
- 1Dog Theory final
Learning theory (the four quadrants, operant & classical conditioning), marker theory & timing, the tone-based method and its 5-step progression, the correction rule, the e-collar working-level concept, the command canon, tool mechanics (slip / prong / e-collar), ethology, body language, health & welfare, and behavior modification.
- 2Business Operations final
Running a Buck’s location — intake mastery, treatment planning & prognosis, packages & pricing, the licensing model, client comms and hard conversations, kennel operations, staffing, the ERP systems, and compliance & safety.
- 3Advanced Trainer Knowledge final
How the method, the tools, the business, and the ERP fit together — edge-case decision-making, methodology defense, bite & safety protocols, off-leash transitions & proofing, service-dog work, and the specialty-track landscape.
Pass all three → you earn your cohort invitation.
Stage 2 · at your 30-day cohort
In-person four-modality exam
The certification itself is earned entirely in person. All four modalities — including the written — are sat at HQ. You pass all four to certify, and annual renewal runs the same battery.
- 1WrittenPass 80%
Closed-book multiple-choice + short-answer cumulative exam, sat in person.
- 2Informational OralPass 14 / 20
Structured oral exam with 1–2 instructors, closed-book.
- 3Behavioral ObservationPass 14 / 20
Live observation teaching or coaching a real beginner team.
- 4Physical PracticalPass 4 of 5 stations
Multi-station live-dog demonstration of hands-on skills.
Pass all four → you're certified.
Stage 2, day by day — finals week in person
Graded by assigned examiners
Each in-person exam is scored by a qualified examiner assigned to your cohort — not self-reported.
Retests built in
Day 30 holds make-up retests for any single modality you do not pass on the first attempt.
Renewal is the same
Annual recertification runs the identical in-person four-modality battery. The standard never drops.
